Naan is a classic Indian flatbread, traditionally cooked in a tandoor oven. The air fryer offers a convenient way to achieve a similar result at home. Find our base recipe using yogurt, flour, and yeast, with detailed steps and air frying times on this page.

Steps
01Mix flour, yeast, sugar, salt, and baking powder in a bowl.
02Add the yogurt, warm water, and oil. Stir until a dough forms, then knead for 3 to 4 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add a splash more water if too dry or a dusting of flour if too sticky.
03Cover and let rise for 1 hour until doubled. (Or shortcut: skip the rise and let rest for 15 minutes. It will be slightly less fluffy but still good.)
04Divide into 4 equal pieces. Roll each into an oval about 1/4 inch thick and 6 to 7 inches long.
05Ready for the air fryer. Cook one or two at a time depending on basket size.
06As soon as each naan comes out, brush with melted butter (mixed with garlic if using) and scatter with cilantro.
The yogurt is doing two jobs: adding tang and tenderizing the dough. The acid breaks down gluten slightly, which is what gives naan its characteristic soft, pliable chew instead of a chewy bread texture. Full-fat yogurt works better than low-fat. Greek yogurt is too thick and makes the dough dry.
