During cooking

The Shake-the-Basket Rule

Air fryers cook by blasting food with circulating hot air from above. That means the top of your food gets more direct heat than the bottom or the sides. Shaking the basket redistributes everything so each piece gets even exposure.

For small items like fries, tater tots, or diced vegetables — pull the basket out and give it a good shake. For larger items like chicken thighs or pork chops, use tongs to flip them. The goal is the same: get every surface some time facing the heat source.

Steps
01

Set a timer for the halfway point of your cook time.

02

Pull the basket out (this pauses most air fryers automatically).

03

For small items: shake the basket 2-3 times.

04

For large items: flip each piece with silicone tongs.

05

Push the basket back in and finish cooking.

Pro tips

Pro Tip

For foods that really need even cooking, shake at 1/3 and 2/3 of the cook time.

Pro Tip

Don't overcrowd the basket — if food is piled up, shaking won't help much.

Pro Tip

Opening the basket doesn't meaningfully drop the temperature. Shake away.

Pro Tip

Silicone tongs won't scratch your non-stick basket. Metal tongs will.
